WAKA FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION

about

WAKA FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION IN NIGERIA (WFAN) was officially incorporated on the 22nd of January 2021.

Prior to its incorporation as a body to run and organize walking football in Nigeria, the founding members have been “walking” as a group since January 2020 and were one of the pioneer registrants for the postponed maiden Walking football World Cup tournament slated for May 2020 in Manchester, England.

Covid-19 played a major role in the postponement of the 2020 and 2021 world cups. The world Cup is now scheduled for May 2023.

Covid-19 also delayed the rapid growth and popularity of walking football in Nigeria. Most teams could not practise for over two years.

Waka Football Association in Nigeria also known as WAKANAIJA has grown in leaps and bounds since its
formation playing friendly and competitive matches both locally and Internationally.

The very first Walking Football match in Nigeria was held in Abuja late 2021 when Lagos played and beat Abuja at home. 1-2.

Similarly the very first international walking football match in Africa was held in September 2022 when Nigeria played against Rwanda in Kigali.

Nigeria and Rwanda remain the most vibrant teams in Africa and will represent Africa alongside Morrocco in Manchester in 2023.

Waka Football Association in Nigeria is a member of the world governing body, The International Federation of Walking Football FIWA, based in England.
